What it usually means
ESFi lists sizzles, buzzes and other unusual sounds from your electrical system as warning signs to have checked (ESFi), and its safety check asks whether you hear crackling, sizzling or buzzing from your outlets (ESFi). What it can mean:
- A loose connectionCurrent jumping across a loose connection can buzz or crackle. That’s arcing, and it makes heat.
- A breaker under strain or not seated wellA breaker that’s overloaded, worn, or not making good contact where it plugs into the panel can hum or buzz.
- A dimmer and bulb mismatchA light hum from a dimmer is often the dimmer and the bulbs not matching. It’s worth fixing, but it’s usually not urgent unless the dimmer is hot.
- Normal equipment humTransformers, including the utility transformer outside and some doorbell or low-voltage transformers, can hum softly. A hum that gets louder, changes, or comes with heat or a smell is not normal.
Safe for you to check
- Find where the sound is coming from: one outlet, a switch, a light, or the panel.
- If it’s an outlet or switch, stop using it and unplug what’s in it if you can do it safely.
- If you can reach the panel safely and it isn’t the noisy, hot or smelly part, turn off that circuit’s breaker.
- Look without touching for scorch marks, melted plastic or discoloration. Notice any smell.
- Write down when it happens, for example only when the dryer or AC runs. That helps us.
Leave these alone
- Don’t take the panel cover off or press on breakers to see if the sound changes.
- Don’t ignore crackling or sizzling, even if everything still works.
- Don’t keep using a buzzing outlet or switch.
- Don’t touch a panel that’s hot, buzzing loudly or smells burnt.
How IES helps
- 1We find the noise
We check the device, the circuit and the panel, including the breakers and the connections behind them, to find what’s buzzing and why.
- 2We fix the cause
Usually that’s tightening or repairing a connection, replacing a worn outlet, switch, dimmer or breaker, or moving a heavy load to its own circuit.
- 3If the panel is worn out
We can change it out. We handle the permit, the inspection and PG&E’s disconnect and reconnect. You just say yes.

Common questions
Is it normal for an electrical panel to hum?
A very faint hum can happen, especially under heavy load. Loud buzzing, crackling or sizzling is not normal, and neither is a panel that’s warm or smells. Have it checked.
Why is my outlet buzzing?
Most often a loose connection or a worn outlet. Sometimes it’s the thing plugged in. Unplug it, stop using that outlet, and call an electrician.
Why does my dimmer switch buzz?
Often the dimmer and bulbs don’t match, like an older dimmer with LED bulbs. An LED-rated dimmer usually quiets it. If the dimmer is hot, stop using it.
The transformer on the pole or the box outside is humming. Who do I call?
That’s PG&E equipment. A soft hum can be normal. If it’s loud, changing, sparking or smoking, stay away and call 911 and PG&E.
