One inverter per panel

Solar panels make direct current (DC), and homes run on alternating current (AC). Most systems used one central inverter for the whole array. Enphase’s microinverter converts the power at each panel instead. In June 2008 it announced what it called the solar industry’s first microinverter system, with commercial shipments starting in mid-2008.

Going public

Enphase shares began trading on the NASDAQ on March 30, 2012, under the symbol ENPH. Today it also makes home batteries and energy-management gear.
