Lighting & Outlets

Outlet types: GFCI, AFCI, tamper-resistant, USB and 20-amp

Outlets look similar, but they do different jobs. Here is how to tell them apart.

What is a tamper-resistant outlet?

Tamper-resistant (TR) outlets have internal shutters that open only when both prongs go in together, which keeps kids from inserting objects. The code requires them for most new and replacement 15- and 20-amp, 125-volt outlets in homes. Look for "TR" on the face.

GFCI and AFCI outlets

GFCI outlets have TEST and RESET buttons and protect against shock in wet areas. AFCI or dual-function outlets protect against arcing. See GFCI vs AFCI.

Weather-resistant and outdoor outlets

Outdoor and damp-location outlets must be weather-resistant ("WR") and GFCI-protected, with an "in-use" cover that stays closed with a cord plugged in.

15-amp vs 20-amp outlets

A 20-amp outlet has a T-shaped slot. It belongs only on a 20-amp circuit with 12 AWG wire. Kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms use 20-amp circuits.

Are USB outlets worth it?

Listed USB-combination outlets are convenient in kitchens, bedrooms and offices. Pick a reputable listed brand, since cheap ones can run warm.

What does it cost?

IES installs a GFCI outlet for $135 and an AFCI/GFCI outlet for $190.

Common questions

What does TR mean on an outlet?

TR means tamper-resistant: internal shutters block objects unless both prongs are inserted together. Most new and replacement home outlets must be TR.

Can I put a 20 amp outlet on a 15 amp circuit?

No. A 20-amp outlet belongs on a 20-amp circuit with 12 AWG wire.
