Today's homes are full of electronics, from HVAC boards to appliances to EV chargers. A layered surge protection plan helps protect them.
What does a whole-home surge protector do?
A surge protective device (SPD) installed at the panel limits voltage spikes coming in on the service, from utility switching, nearby lightning or large equipment, before they reach your circuits. Recent code editions require an SPD when a home's service is replaced or upgraded.
Do I still need plug-in surge strips?
Yes, for sensitive electronics. A whole-home SPD handles the big surges at the panel; quality point-of-use strips at TVs, computers and networking gear handle smaller surges and those created inside the house. Together they are a layered approach.
Does surge protection need a ground?
Surge protectors work by diverting energy to ground. Homes with ungrounded 2-prong wiring get limited benefit from plug-in strips; see two-prong outlet options. A good grounding electrode system at the service matters too.
How much does whole-home surge protection cost?
Added during a service or panel upgrade, IES installs whole-home surge protection starting at $415. As a stand-alone job, a breaker-type whole-home surge protector is $460.
About these prices: rough starting-at prices from the IES price book. The final price depends on what we find on site, your utility and your city or county. Estimates are free.
Common questions
Is a whole-house surge protector worth it?
For most homes with modern appliances, HVAC electronics, solar or EV chargers, it is a low-cost layer of protection. It works best combined with plug-in protectors for sensitive electronics.
Is a surge protector required with a new panel?
Recent code editions adopted in California require surge protection when a dwelling service is replaced or upgraded.
General information for California homes under the California Electrical Code (based on the NEC). Local rules and inspectors can vary. Not a substitute for an on-site inspection. Never work inside a panel, at the meter or on live circuits.
